How to properly hang wall art for your home or office

Adding wall art to your home or office is an excellent way to add personality and character to your space. The right piece of art can transform a room, creating a focal point and bringing together all the elements of your decor. However, hanging and spacing wall art can be challenging, and if not done correctly, it can detract from the overall aesthetic of the room. In this blog post, we will discuss the best practices for hanging and spacing wall art to achieve the best aesthetic for your home or office.

Step 1: Choose Your Wall Art

The first step in hanging and spacing wall art is to choose the pieces you want to display. Artwork comes in many different forms, from paintings and photographs to prints and sculptures. Before you start hanging, think about the mood you want to create in the room and choose pieces that reflect that mood. You can also choose artwork based on the color scheme of the room or to complement the existing decor.

Step 2: Determine the Placement

Once you have chosen your wall art, the next step is to determine where to hang it. The placement of the artwork will depend on several factors, including the size of the piece, the height of the ceiling, and the furniture in the room.

For larger pieces of artwork, consider hanging them on a wall with a lot of empty space. This will allow the artwork to stand out and become the focal point of the room. If you have a small piece of artwork, you can consider hanging it in a group with other small pieces to create a larger installation.

When hanging artwork above a piece of furniture such as a sofa or bed, make sure the artwork is centered above the furniture. The center of the artwork should be at eye level, which is typically around 57 inches from the floor.

Step 3: Choose Your Hanging Method

There are several ways to hang wall art, including using picture hangers, nails, or adhesive strips. The method you choose will depend on the weight of the artwork and the type of wall you are hanging it on.

For heavier pieces of artwork, use picture hangers or nails. Picture hangers are a great option because they distribute the weight of the artwork evenly across the wall, reducing the risk of damage. Nails are also an option, but make sure to use a nail that is long enough to hold the weight of the artwork and secure it into a stud or wall anchor.

For lighter pieces of artwork, adhesive strips are a great option. Adhesive strips are easy to use and can be removed without damaging the wall. Make sure to choose strips that are strong enough to hold the weight of the artwork.

Step 4: Measure and Mark

Before you start hanging your wall art, it's essential to measure and mark where you want to place it. Use a measuring tape to determine the center of the wall or the center of the piece of furniture where you will be hanging the artwork.

Once you have determined the center point, measure the distance from the top of the artwork to the hanging point. Mark this measurement on the wall with a pencil. If you are using picture hangers, mark the location where you will be inserting the hanger. If you are using nails, mark the location where you will be driving the nail.

Step 5: Hang Your Wall Art

Now that you have determined the placement, chosen your hanging method, and marked the wall, it's time to hang your wall art. If you are using picture hangers, insert the hanger into the marked location and hang the artwork.

If you are using adhesive strips, follow the manufacturer's instructions for application. Make sure to press the artwork firmly against the wall to ensure it adheres properly.

ART TIP: If you need more than one nail, or you are hanging multiple pictures, use painters tape to "outline" where you want your pictures to be. Use a measuring tape and a level to make sure everything is even and properly placed. This will save you a tremendous amount of headache (and wall damage) in the long run.

Cheers! xoxo
